University administrators were urged on Wednesday to avoid even applying for stimulus money unless they planned to hire people almost immediately, the New York Times reported.

State gets back stolen money

Forensic accountants in the Utah Attorney General's Office have managed
to track down nearly all of the money stolen from the state in an apparent
scam.
About $2.2 million of the $2.5 million reported stolen has been frozen
in a series of accounts, investigators said.
"The good news is we're getting about 87 percent of it back," chief
deputy Utah Attorney General Kirk Torgensen said Monday. "The rest is just

Counties look for ease in raising some taxes

OLYMPIA, Wash. —
County officials want the Legislature to let them raise some taxes without a public vote.
The House Finance Committee held a public hearing on two bills Tuesday, one that would only apply to King County, and the other that would apply to the state's 38 other counties.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reports that the bills would let local county council members raise sales taxes by themselves and give counties the same ability Read the rest of this entry »

Funding for roads, community colleges, buildings at deadline

Legislation that helps pay for repairs to community colleges, state buildings and roads is among the revenue bills up in the air as a key legislative deadline looms this week.
Wednesday is the deadline for money bills to clear the chambers they originated in. If the measures don't gain approval, they will not survive the ongoing 2009 regular legislative session.
The fate of some bills hinges on a federal stimulus package recently signed into law. Read the rest of this entry »

Groups irk GOP over campaign-finance law

Personal Finance: America Saves Week

I'm living so far beyond my income that we may almost be said to be living apart.
– U.S. poet E.E. Cummings
It's taken a financial crisis, but it's starting to stick: Americans are saving more. Or at least trying.
Part of it has been forced. As paychecks shrink, jobs dry up, mortgages collapse and credit card companies clamp down, many Americans have had no choice. They couldn't keep spending.
And the savings are beginning to add up. Read the rest of this entry »
